Domain privacy is not the same as anonymity. A registrar may redact personal contact fields from the public registration directory while still retaining your identity, payment record, and account history. What a privacy-focused registrar should provide
- Public redaction or proxy service: Confirm which fields are hidden in the current RDAP/registration lookup and whether exceptions apply to organizations or certain TLDs.
- Clear internal-data policy: Read retention, legal-request, abuse-handling, and service-provider language. “WHOIS privacy included” does not mean the registrar never stores your information.
- Account security: Require MFA, registrar lock, transfer authorization controls, and clear recovery procedures. Domain takeover is a bigger practical risk than a public spam message.
- Transparent pricing: Compare registration, renewal, transfer, redemption, and privacy add-on costs. A cheap first year can become expensive later.
- Ownership clarity: A normal registration keeps you as the registered name holder while hiding public fields. A proxy or nominee arrangement may change who appears as the legal holder; understand the contract before using it for a business asset.
Privacy is not anonymity
Standard privacy protection can keep a home address and phone number out of public lookups. It does not prevent a registrar, payment processor, registry, or lawful requester from associating the domain with you. Payment method, hosting logs, analytics, email, and account recovery can also identify the operator.
If your threat model includes targeted harassment or a high-risk publication, document the registrar’s legal-request and account-recovery process. Do not assume cryptocurrency or a proxy makes a business domain untraceable or transfers risk away from you.
Compare registrars by evidence, not slogans
