Enpass and Bitwarden are both credible password managers, but they make a different first decision: where the encrypted vault is synchronized. Bitwarden is a cloud service with open-source clients and an optional self-hosted server. Enpass is an offline-first app that lets you use a cloud account you choose as the encrypted sync location.
Neither model is automatically safer. The better choice depends on whether you value a simple managed service, public source code, and generous free access, or direct control over the storage service and a non-monthly licensing option.
The short answer
- Choose Bitwarden if you want a polished managed cloud service, open-source code, a genuinely useful free plan, easy sharing, or the option to self-host a Bitwarden server.
- Choose Enpass if you want the vault synchronized through your own iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, WebDAV, or similar storage account, and you prefer its current three-year payment option or personal workflow.
- Do not choose either solely because of the words “zero knowledge.” Read how each product encrypts, synchronizes, backs up, and recovers your vault, then protect the master password and recovery material.
Storage and encryption model
Bitwarden encrypts vault data on the device before sending it to Bitwarden’s servers. Its encryption documentation describes AES-256-CBC with HMAC-SHA-256 and public-key cryptography for sharing features. Bitwarden says its servers store encrypted data and do not have the keys needed to decrypt the vault. That reduces the impact of a server-side data exposure, but a weak master password, a compromised device, or an attacker controlling an already-unlocked session remains a risk.
Bitwarden’s codebase is available on GitHub, and the company lists source-code audits, penetration tests, compliance work, and a bug-bounty program on its audits and certifications page. Open source improves transparency and enables review; it is not proof that every release or configuration is bug-free.
Enpass describes itself as an offline password manager. Its sync page says your vault can sync through a cloud service you select rather than through Enpass’s own password-vault servers. Enpass’s security documentation explains that the encrypted data file is downloaded and decrypted locally for synchronization, while the cloud acts as storage. The practical advantage is control over the storage account and fewer vendor-specific vault servers. The trade-off is that you must secure that storage account, maintain access to it, and understand how conflicts and backups work.
“Local-first” does not mean “never leaves the device.” If you enable Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, WebDAV, or another supported sync method, an encrypted vault copy is stored there. Likewise, “cloud” does not mean Bitwarden’s staff can read a properly encrypted vault. The security boundary is different, not absent.
Pricing and free access
Bitwarden’s current pricing page lists a free personal plan with unlimited passwords and devices, plus paid Premium and Families plans. Premium adds features such as encrypted file attachments, the integrated authenticator, emergency access, and security reports. Families covers up to six people and adds family sharing. Prices are shown in U.S. dollars, billed annually, before taxes, and can change.
Enpass currently lists an Individual subscription, a Family subscription for up to six members, and a three-year one-time payment option on its pricing page. The page currently lists unlimited passwords, items, vaults, and devices on those paid offerings, along with passkey support and breach alerts. Enpass also states that people with an earlier one-time Premium license or an eligible recurring license do not pay again for Premium features. That is not the same as promising a new lifetime license for every future release, so check the purchase terms shown at checkout.
Pricing is not an apples-to-apples monthly comparison. Bitwarden’s free plan can cover a single user’s basic cross-device password management at no charge. Enpass’s three-year option may appeal to someone who dislikes recurring billing, but it requires more money up front and still leaves you responsible for the storage service used for sync.

Bitwarden documents a free two-person organization for sharing credentials. That is useful for a couple or two-person household, but it is not the same as giving a free organization unlimited family members. Enpass may be a better fit for a local vault workflow, but do not assume that a one-time payment automatically includes every collaboration feature.
Self-hosting: an important distinction
Bitwarden supports running its server application on your own infrastructure. Its self-hosting guide describes Docker-based deployment options and warns that administration requires server, database, certificate, update, backup, and recovery knowledge. Self-hosting is not a set-and-forget privacy switch. A neglected server can be less secure than a well-maintained managed service.
Enpass does not ask you to run an Enpass server for normal sync. You select a supported storage provider and the app synchronizes the encrypted vault file through it. That is simpler than operating a password-manager server, but it is not the same kind of self-hosting: the storage service still has availability, account-recovery, and retention policies you need to understand.
Sharing and family use
Bitwarden has a more explicit organization model. Families, Teams, and Enterprise plans provide shared collections, member management, and additional controls. The free organization is limited to two users. If your household needs shared logins, emergency access, or clear ownership when someone leaves, map that workflow before choosing a plan.
Enpass can work well for one person or a household that already has a trusted sync arrangement. Before buying, verify how the current family plan handles membership, shared vaults, and device activation. Do not infer collaboration limits from an older review or from the desktop app’s feature list; licensing and app capabilities change.
Which one is easier to recover?
Password-manager recovery is deliberately limited. Bitwarden notes that the service cannot reset or retrieve a forgotten master password because it does not possess the decryption key. Enpass likewise depends on your master password and the availability of the encrypted vault and sync account. In either product, export an encrypted or otherwise protected backup according to the vendor’s instructions, store recovery codes safely, and test that you can sign in on a second device before you need it.
If a provider offers emergency access, read its waiting period and approval rules. A recovery contact should not become an unrestricted back door to every credential without your knowledge.

It gives you more choice over the storage service used for sync, and Enpass says it does not send the vault to an Enpass password-storage server. Is Bitwarden safer because it is open source?
