Klaviyo vs. Omnisend 2026: Which Platform Fits Ecommerce?

GoodBetterBest Reviews··9 min read

Klaviyo and Omnisend are both ecommerce-focused email platforms with Shopify integrations, customer profiles, behavioral events, automation workflows, and SMS options. The important difference is not a permanent “data depth versus affordability” slogan. It is how each platform defines a billable contact, handles send limits, packages SMS, and exposes store events to the workflows your team needs.

Quick decision

Current free plans

Both free plans are small and are better treated as evaluation environments than as long-term plans for a growing store.

Klaviyo Free Omnisend Free
Audience limit Up to 250 profiles Up to 250 unique contacts per campaign/reach
Email limit 500 emails per month 500 emails per month
Import behavior Profile limits affect sending and live flows You can upload more contacts, but campaigns must target 250 or fewer
SMS Separate mobile-messaging product and rules Availability depends on subscription date; new Free/Standard subscribers after May 4, 2026 need Pro for SMS
Support Email support for first 60 days, then community/education Check current support terms by plan

Klaviyo documents its free-plan limits. Omnisend’s 2026 pricing guide says Free allows 500 emails per month to up to 250 unique contacts, even though unlimited contacts can be uploaded. That distinction can surprise a store owner who sees a large audience in the dashboard but cannot send to all of it.

How billing differs

Klaviyo’s email plan is based on active profiles and email volume. An active profile is one that can be emailed, including some contacts added through general engagement. Suppressed profiles are not a factor in active-profile pricing. If an account exceeds its active-profile limit, Klaviyo can move it to a higher tier at the next billing cycle; if a Free account exceeds its profile limit, sending and live flow emails are blocked until the account is reduced or upgraded.

Omnisend bills on billable contacts, which currently include subscribers and non-subscribers. Non-subscribers can include customers who purchased without marketing consent, abandoned-cart contacts, or imported records without an opt-in date. Unsubscribers are excluded. Omnisend says the bill is adjusted monthly based on the billable count, so an ecommerce store can grow into a higher tier even when its newsletter subscriber count appears stable.

Omnisend’s current guide lists Standard starting at $16/month with email credits calculated as billable contacts × 12, and Pro starting at $59/month with unlimited emails. These are starting prices, not quotes for every list size or country. SMS packaging changed for new paid subscriptions on May 4, 2026: new Standard subscriptions do not include SMS, while Pro can add SMS with volume pricing starting at $0.007 per message. Existing subscribers may retain legacy terms.

Use the Klaviyo pricing page and Omnisend pricing calculator with the same active/billable contact count, monthly email volume, SMS volume, and required features. A low entry price is not meaningful if your data model causes rapid tier changes.

Shopify integration and data sync

Klaviyo’s Shopify integration documentation covers profile information, custom properties, email and SMS subscription statuses, and events. Those fields can feed segments and flows, but the exact sync choices and timing depend on integration settings.

Omnisend’s Shopify connection guide says it syncs customers, products, orders, and behavioral activity. Historical data may take up to 24 hours; new orders and customer actions are generally instant or within a few minutes, while some profile or tag updates take longer. Shopify 2.0 stores must enable the Omnisend app embed for tracking to work correctly.

The connection screen is not the test. For either platform, use a disposable contact and test order to verify:

  1. the customer is created or matched rather than duplicated;
  2. consent status is correct;
  3. the product and order event appears on the profile;
  4. abandoned-cart and post-purchase flows trigger once, at the intended delay;
  5. unsubscribe and SMS-consent changes propagate; and
  6. disconnecting the store pauses or removes automations as documented.

Omnisend warns that changing a contact’s email or phone identifier in Shopify can create a duplicate profile instead of updating the existing one. Klaviyo and Omnisend both require an identity strategy before a large import.

Automation and segmentation

Klaviyo is built around event and profile logic. A flow can respond to a purchase, browse event, property change, list membership, or segment condition. This can be powerful for cohorts, lifecycle measurement, and revenue attribution, but it makes clean event naming, consent, and data ownership important.

Omnisend offers pre-built workflows such as welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, order follow-up, replenishment, and reactivation. Its workflow documentation describes email, SMS, and push blocks, trigger filters, delays, paths, and exit conditions. Omnisend’s presets can shorten setup time, but they still need testing against your store’s native Shopify automations so customers do not receive duplicate messages.

For both products, assess the same workflow rather than counting templates:

SMS and multi-channel cost

Klaviyo separates email/profile billing from mobile messaging. SMS/MMS/WhatsApp consent, carrier fees, message credits, and regional rules should be modeled separately from email.

Omnisend has historically been attractive to stores wanting email and SMS in one ecommerce workflow, but its 2026 plan changes matter. New subscribers after May 4, 2026 do not get SMS on Free or Standard; Pro users can add SMS with volume-based pricing. Legacy customers may have different included-credit terms. Confirm the subscription date, region, and SMS product before using an old comparison.

Neither platform’s SMS price includes permission to text people without proper consent. Treat email and SMS subscription status as separate channels and audit the opt-in source.

Deliverability: what the platform cannot guarantee

Both vendors provide tools for ecommerce sending, but no platform can guarantee inbox placement for every sender. Deliverability depends on consent, list hygiene, bounce and complaint rates, domain reputation, content, sending patterns, and authentication.

Before migrating or increasing volume:

Do not pick a platform because an old review calls its deliverability “better.” A clean, permission-based list on a correctly authenticated domain is more important than a generic reputation ranking.

Which platform is easier to operate?

Omnisend may be easier to launch when pre-built ecommerce workflows, a visual builder, and email/SMS/push blocks match your store. Klaviyo may be easier to operate at scale when the team already thinks in profiles, events, segments, and lifecycle attribution.

That is an operational fit, not a permanent product ranking. Have the person who will own campaigns build a welcome flow and abandoned-cart flow in both trials. Count the steps, QA time, data cleanup, and reporting work—not just clicks to create the first email.

Migration checklist

Before switching platforms, preserve:

Run one flow in parallel or in a test account, then disable the old flow only after the new trigger is confirmed. Keep the old account read-only until exports and historical reports are verified.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Klaviyo or Omnisend?

There is no permanent winner. Klaviyo prices active profiles and email volume; Omnisend prices subscribers plus non-subscribers and changes tiers as billable contacts grow. SMS packaging also differs. Use both calculators with the same data and send assumptions.

Which is better for Shopify?

Both have direct integrations. Klaviyo is a strong fit for profile/event-driven lifecycle programs; Omnisend offers ecommerce sync and pre-built workflows. Test the specific events, consent statuses, and timing your store needs.

Can I use Omnisend or Klaviyo for free?

Yes, but both current free plans are limited to roughly 250 audience records and 500 monthly emails. Omnisend lets you upload more contacts but limits campaign reach; Klaviyo blocks sending when the free profile ceiling is exceeded.

Is Omnisend’s SMS still included with Standard?

For new paid subscriptions on or after May 4, 2026, Omnisend says SMS is available only on Pro, with volume-based pricing. Older subscriptions may retain legacy terms. Verify the offer attached to your account.

Which has better deliverability?

Neither can promise a universal advantage. Authentication, consent, list hygiene, content, and sending behavior determine much of the outcome. Test your own domain and audience rather than relying on a permanent vendor ranking.

The bottom line

Klaviyo is the better fit when the store’s competitive advantage comes from detailed profile and event data, while Omnisend can be the better fit when pre-built ecommerce workflows and a simpler multi-channel package match the team. The current free plans are similarly small, and Omnisend’s May 2026 SMS changes make old comparisons unreliable. Compare the complete bill, test a real Shopify event, verify consent and identity behavior, and choose the system your team can maintain accurately.
