The free plan: generous, but not unlimited
Windscribe’s current pricing guidance says Free provides access to servers in 11 countries and 10 GB of data per month with a confirmed email address. Without a confirmed email, the allowance is 2 GB/month. The free plan does not require a credit card.
Windscribe’s Windows comparison says the Free and Pro apps share the same core encryption and Firewall, while Free has fewer locations and a monthly data cap. That makes it a good way to test the interface and a few locations. It is not a practical replacement for a paid plan if you stream frequently, download large files, or need a specific country every day.
Build-A-Plan and Pro pricing
Build-A-Plan is the distinctive option. Windscribe currently describes a $3/month minimum, with locations costing $1/month each. Unlimited data and full R.O.B.E.R.T. access can be added for another $1. Pro is listed at $9/month or $69/year and includes unlimited data and access to 69+ countries. Static IPs are separate.
Those figures are the provider’s current published prices, not a permanent guarantee. Check the checkout page, taxes, currency, and renewal behavior before buying. Build-A-Plan is attractive when you repeatedly need only a couple of locations; Pro is simpler when you want the full network or expect your needs to change.
Privacy and jurisdiction
Windscribe operates from Canada. Jurisdiction deserves consideration, but a country label does not tell the whole privacy story. The more useful questions are what the provider retains, what independent reviewers examined, and whether the infrastructure has been tested under real pressure.
Windscribe’s current no-identifying-logs page says it does not store connection logs, IP timestamps, session logs, browsing history, or DNS queries. It also says it stores the last time an account was used and total data used over a 30-day period to enforce free-plan limits and prevent abuse. That is a narrower and more credible statement than “we store absolutely nothing.”
Windscribe says PacketLabs audited its full server infrastructure in June 2024, while earlier Leviathan and Cure53 work examined apps and server components. R.O.B.E.R.T. is Windscribe’s DNS-based control layer. The current feature page says Free includes malware and ad block lists with three access rules; Build-A-Plan includes all lists and 10 rules; Pro includes all lists and up to 1,000 rules.
R.O.B.E.R.T. can reduce exposure to known malware, phishing, ads, and trackers, but DNS filtering is not a substitute for endpoint antivirus or careful browsing. A blocklist can also create false positives. Test the sites and apps you actually need and add narrowly scoped allow rules only when necessary.
Protocols, devices, and performance
Windscribe supports common protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, and its apps can import WireGuard or OpenVPN configurations. Unlimited device connections are available on the Free and paid plans, but connection speed still depends on the network, location, server load, protocol, and device.
Do not treat one speed chart as a permanent ranking. Use the free plan or refund period to test video calls, uploads, gaming, and the specific locations you use. Router or custom-config setups can also lose app-level features, so test those separately.
Streaming and peer-to-peer use
Windscribe may work with some streaming services, but compatibility changes as platforms block VPN endpoints. The old “Windflix” label should not be treated as a permanent guarantee; check current support documentation and the exact service/library you need.
