TurboTax

The most popular tax software in America — polished, guided, and worth it for complicated returns

TurboTax earns Gold as the category leader: the most guided step-by-step experience, the best W-2 and investment import system, and a Max Refund Guarantee that backs every return. It's the right choice when your tax situation is complex — self-employment, investments, rental income, life changes — because TurboTax's interview catches deductions most people miss. The main tradeoff is price: you'll pay $39–$89 for federal (plus $39 per state), which is 2–5x more than competitors. For a simple W-2 return, FreeTaxUSA does the same job for $0. For everything else, TurboTax's accuracy and guided experience justify the cost.

FreeTaxUSA

Federal filing free for every American — not just the simple returns

FreeTaxUSA earns Gold by doing something TurboTax refuses to do: file your federal return for free regardless of complexity. W-2 employee, freelancer, investor, rental property owner — it's $0 federal for everyone. State returns cost $14.99. The Deluxe upgrade ($7.99) adds audit support. That's the entire pricing model. The interface is less polished than TurboTax and the import tools are more manual, but the accuracy is solid and the IRS-certified e-file system is the same infrastructure every competitor uses. For the 80% of Americans who don't need hand-holding, FreeTaxUSA is the rational choice.
