Private Relay is not designed as a catalog of selectable commercial VPN exit countries. A VPN may offer location choices or private-network access, but availability and use can be limited by the provider, destination, app, or local law.
Cost
Private Relay is part of an iCloud+ subscription. A VPN adds another subscription, often with an introductory price and a different renewal price. Compare the complete term, renewal, device limit, refund period, and cancellation path before paying.
Performance and battery
Neither tool has a universal speed or battery result. Test your normal Wi-Fi and cellular connections with the exact iPhone, app, and locations you use. Record page loading, video-call stability, latency, reconnects, and battery over a normal session. A distant VPN endpoint can matter more than the protocol name.
Can you use both?
Sometimes, but enabling both does not automatically create “double privacy.” The services may interact differently across Safari, other apps, DNS, and managed networks. If you try both:
- Record which protection is enabled and which apps you are testing.
- Check the public IP, DNS behavior, and access to the services you need.
- Test Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoff, sleep/wake, reconnects, and a video call.
- Disable one service at a time so you can tell which behavior changed.
If a work or school administrator requires a managed VPN, follow that policy instead of layering a consumer VPN over it without permission.
