The best iPhone VPN is not the one with the most servers or the loudest speed claim. It is the service whose privacy policy and independent evidence match your threat model, whose iOS app supports the controls you need, and whose plan still works when you move between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
We did not run a controlled speed or battery test on every provider, so this guide does not invent rankings or percentages. VPN performance changes with the protocol, server, congestion, carrier, location, and iPhone model. Treat any dated benchmark as a snapshot, not a permanent winner.
What an iPhone VPN can and cannot do
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between the device and a VPN provider. It can reduce what a local network operator sees and replace the public IP address presented to websites. It does not make a phishing link safe, stop an account takeover, remove malware, or turn an untrusted VPN provider into a trusted one.
Start by naming the job:
- Protect traffic on public Wi-Fi.
- Reduce exposure of the home or mobile-network IP address.
- Reach a service while traveling, where that service permits it.
- Connect to a work or private network.
- Add a privacy layer for selected apps or all device traffic.
The answer may be different for each job. A company-managed VPN, a consumer privacy VPN, and Apple's Private Relay are not interchangeable products.
iOS support and app permissions
Apple supports third-party VPN clients on iPhone and iPad, but the app must be allowed to add a VPN configuration to the device. Apple's device-management documentation also shows that organizations can impose VPN settings through a configuration profile.[1] Check the provider's current App Store listing and iOS support page for:
- Minimum iOS version and supported iPhone models.
- WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN, or a provider-specific protocol.
- Automatic reconnection and kill-switch behavior.
- DNS and IPv6 leak protection.
- Whether split tunneling is available on iOS, and what it actually excludes.
- The support path if the app loses its configuration after an iOS update.
Do not assume a desktop feature exists on iPhone. Apple's mobile operating-system rules and the VPN API can limit how an app routes traffic in the background.
Private Relay is not the same as a VPN
iCloud Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature primarily associated with Safari and iCloud+. It is not a general replacement for every VPN use case, such as a work tunnel, a chosen VPN country, or a provider-controlled protocol.
Apple documents that some websites, networks, and third-party apps—including VPN or filtering software—can be incompatible with Private Relay. On iPhone, the setting is exposed as Limit IP Address Tracking for a specific Wi-Fi or cellular network.[2] If a website, bank, workplace, or captive portal fails, test the network with Private Relay or the VPN temporarily disabled and document which setting fixed the problem. Avoid claiming that both services can always run together.
Privacy evidence matters more than marketing
Compare providers by evidence, not the phrase “military-grade.” Look for:
- A clear explanation of what account, payment, diagnostic, and connection data is collected.
- A current independent audit that describes its scope and date.
- Open-source app code or reproducible technical documentation where available.
- A published jurisdiction and a realistic explanation of legal requests.
- A kill switch and leak-protection description that matches the iOS app.
Proton VPN is a useful example of how to read a free-plan claim. Proton says its free plan has no data limits, one simultaneous VPN connection, a limited country pool, and the same audited no-logs policy as its paid plans; it also documents the free-plan server-selection limits.[3] That is evidence about Proton's stated product, not proof that every free VPN is safe or that Proton is the best choice for every use case.
Protocols, speed, and battery
WireGuard and IKEv2 are common iPhone choices because they can reconnect efficiently as a phone moves between networks. OpenVPN can still be useful for compatibility, but the right choice depends on the provider's implementation and the network. We do not claim a universal battery or speed winner.
To test a provider yourself:
- Record an unprotected baseline on the same Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
- Test the nearest server and a distant server at the same times of day.
- Measure latency, download, upload, and reconnect behavior at least three times each.
- Repeat while the phone is idle and while using the apps that matter to you.
- Check for DNS or IPv6 leaks, battery impact, and failures when moving between Wi-Fi and cellular.
A VPN that is fast in one city or on one carrier may be slow somewhere else. A provider's own “up to” speed figure is not a result for your phone.
Kill switch, always-on, and split tunneling
A kill switch should block traffic if the VPN tunnel drops, but the exact behavior can vary by protocol and iOS state. Enable it, then test by switching networks, forcing the app to reconnect, and checking whether the public IP is exposed during the transition.
Split tunneling can be useful when a banking app, streaming service, printer, or local network must bypass the VPN. On iPhone, support is less uniform than on desktop. Read the provider's iOS documentation for whether the feature is true per-app routing, a list of excluded domains, or unavailable altogether.
Free VPNs and Proton's free tier
Do not treat “free” as a privacy category. Read the provider's data policy, ownership, advertising model, audit scope, and feature limits. A free plan may be acceptable for occasional public Wi-Fi use but unsuitable for a chosen-country connection, streaming, multiple devices, or high-assurance work.
Proton's current free iPhone plan is unusually transparent: it advertises no ads, no data or speed limits, open-source apps, an audited no-logs policy, kill switch/always-on behavior, and a limited set of randomly selected countries.[4] Proton also says paid plans add more locations, simultaneous connections, streaming support, and advanced features. Verify those limits at signup because product packaging changes.
A practical iPhone VPN shortlist method
Score each candidate against your actual requirements:

Do not pay for a top tier just to obtain a feature you cannot use on iOS. Conversely, do not choose a free tier if its country selection or simultaneous-connection limit defeats the purpose.
Bottom line
Choose an iPhone VPN by current iOS support, privacy evidence, tested kill-switch behavior, protocol fit, and the countries or network access you actually need. Proton VPN Free is a credible no-cost benchmark because its stated limits and privacy evidence are unusually clear, but it is not a universal winner. Private Relay can be useful for Safari privacy, but it does not replace every VPN or work requirement.
Test the app on your own Wi-Fi and cellular networks, read the renewal terms, and avoid speed, battery, or “best for everyone” claims that no controlled test supports.
