What the independent lab pages actually show
AV-TEST reports three separate scores: protection, performance, and usability, each out of six. On the latest pages available for this review, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 scored 6/6/6 in June 2026. ESET Security Ultimate 19.0 and 19.1 scored 6 for protection, 5.5 for performance, and 6 for usability in April 2026.
Those results support two careful conclusions: both products achieved full protection and usability scores in those rounds, and Bitdefender’s listed performance score was higher in that particular test. They do not prove that every computer will feel faster with Bitdefender, nor do they establish a permanent ranking. Hardware, settings, background software, and test versions matter.

ESET: best fit for control and a lean feature set
ESET’s current Home protection plans cover real-time malware and ransomware protection, anti-phishing, network defenses, and device management. ESET also advertises a small system footprint and Gamer Mode on its NOD32 page. Those are vendor-described design goals, not a guarantee that no scan or update will use CPU or disk resources.
ESET is a good fit when you want to tune exclusions, notifications, and network behavior yourself. That flexibility can be useful on a work PC or an older system, but it also means there are more settings to understand. If you only want a security product that makes most decisions for you, the additional controls may feel like friction.

That distinction matters. Calling Total Security’s VPN “unlimited” would be inaccurate, and a VPN bundle is not automatically a reason to buy an antivirus plan if you already use a separate VPN. Bitdefender also offers profiles and automated settings that may suit people who prefer fewer manual decisions.
Bitdefender’s broad bundle can be convenient for a household with multiple platforms. Check the exact device count and renewal price for the offer in your region; the first-year promotion is not the same as the ongoing cost.
Feature-by-feature decision guide
Malware protection
Both products earned full protection scores in the cited AV-TEST rounds. That is stronger evidence than a blanket statement that one engine is always superior. For a purchase decision, also check whether the current product supports your operating system and whether its anti-phishing, ransomware, and banking features match your risk.
Performance and gaming
The cited AV-TEST results give Bitdefender a 6 and ESET a 5.5 for performance in their respective latest listed rounds. That is not enough to call either product “the lightest” for every PC. Use a trial on the machine that matters, measure application launch and game load times with the same background tasks, and avoid adding broad scan exclusions merely to produce a favorable result.
ESET advertises Gamer Mode, while Bitdefender advertises profiles that can postpone notifications and selected background activity. The practical winner is the product whose defaults and controls behave well with your games and security settings.

How to compare the real price
Do not compare only the headline first-year number. Before checkout, record:
- the number and type of devices included;
- the renewal price and whether auto-renew is enabled;
- whether the VPN has a data cap or server-selection limit;
- whether the plan includes the operating systems your household uses;
- refund and cancellation terms; and
- which features disappear when the subscription expires.
ESET’s FAQ explains that auto-renew can be turned off while protection continues through the paid term. Bitdefender’s product page presents yearly and multi-year offers that can change by region. Save a copy of the terms you accepted so a later renewal is not a surprise.
Which should you choose?
